SunSmart WA School Surfing Titles

For the past 12 weeks, students have participated in weekly training sessions held at Middleton beach before school. Their commitment was undeniable, with a fresh 6.30 am start in the middle of winter. The training was in preparation for the annual SunSmart Regional State surfing and bodyboarding titles.

The event was held at Ocean Beach, Denmark, on the 12th of August. The conditions weren't ideal, with strong onshore North East winds and relatively low swell. However, the students adapted well to the conditions and competed to the best of their ability.

Round one was a huge success, with all but two teams making it through. Honourable mentions to both these teams as they tried their best in challenging conditions. Jesse Owens' partner couldn't make it in the morning; however, his two waves were very competitive but, unfortunately, not enough to progress. Evie Holthouse and Rosie Ashton gave it their all but had some tough competition, not progressing.

Brock Herbert and Josh Ponsford competed to get to the second round but met some stiff competition and didn't get through to the semis. Pippa Simmonds and Keely Durant had a friendly meet with their NASHS rivals Maisie Mitchell and Holly Froehnelt. There were many party waves shared and good vibes all round; however, Maisie and Holly proved to have the tenacity to progress to the final.

Jez Wakefield and James Taylor were strong in their division, making the semis. However, meeting a local Denmark team highlighted the home ground advantage. Two Denmark teams competed in the Junior Boys surfing final.

We had a stacked division of Junior boys bodyboarding, with NASHS entering four teams. We had two NASHS teams in the final, Hector Volckerts and Tyla Anderson competing against Declan Poett and Ashton Sobik; the final was tight with regular wave exchanges.

Jack Day and Elijah Medling were dual division finalists, coming second in Senior boys surfing. For the third year in a row, the boys won their Senior Boys' Bodyboarding. Their win in the bodyboarding division was convincing, smashing the other teams out of the water.

For the first time, NASHS took home the championship trophy beating ASHS by a few points. We'll be sending away a team of five, consisting of Hector Volckerts, Maisie Mitchell, Holly Froehnelt, Jack Day and Elijah Medling, representing NASHS at Trigg in Perth on the 26th of August. Wish them all luck!
