Three Year 11 students: Lola Lear, Abbey Turnbull and Zoe Versluis, and I attended the Women in Leadership conference on March 8; thanks for tickets generously donated by the Bendigo Bank.
This conference, which took place at Oceans Church, focused on ‘Breaking the Bias’ and showcased the achievements of women in the Great Southern Region. A panel of women in leadership spoke to the packed crowd, including Bernadette Duell, who founded Great Southern Wills, and Rebecca Stephens, MLA for Albany. This was a chance for the audience to ask questions, and the conversation was lively and interactive.
There were two keynote speakers: Cara Peek, a Yawuru/Bunuba woman who co-founded the Cultural Intelligence Project, and Elizabeth Lang, CEO of Diversity Focus, a company specialising in workplace cultural diversity. Both women spoke honestly and passionately about the importance of having both women, and cultural diversity, seated at the table when it came to provoking change in gender bias.
The conference was interesting, and the speakers and panellists were entertaining and thought-provoking. The Albany Chamber of Commerce excelled in the organisation and execution of this event, with an outstanding menu, generous goodie bags and networking opportunities. Zoe even won a prize: a beautiful plant from Designer Dirt. All in all, we came away thoroughly impressed by the event.
Thanks again to Lyn and Jan for giving the students and I the opportunity to be involved in such an outstanding event.
