Rose has been interested in law and politics since studying Civics and Citizenship in Year 10, and she hopes to one day build a career in human rights and international law.
Rose is currently studying ATAR Law and Politics through SIDE (School of Isolated and Distance Education). SIDE gives students the chance to study subjects online during school time that aren’t offered at NASHS.
“I really wanted to continue studying Law and Politics after enjoying it in Year 10, but I thought it wasn’t available at this school,” Rose said. “Then the school let me know I could do it through SIDE, which was great.”
The National Youth Parliament brings together 150 senior secondary students from across Australia for a hands-on civics experience, including simulated parliamentary debates.
As soon as Rose saw that applications had opened, she knew she had to give it a go. “Mum got the notification at the same time and said, ‘Rose, you have to apply!’”
To help her application stand out, Rose organised written recommendations from local Liberal Member Rick Wilson, as well as the teacher who helped spark her love of politics and law - NASHS Head of Humanities and Social Sciences, Ms Ali Quinn.
“Rose’s passion for human rights and civic duty is contagious,” said Ms Quinn. “As an advocate for minority groups, diversity, and those less fortunate than herself, she is sure to go on and make her own positive impact in the world.”
Out of more than 2,200 applications, only 150 students were selected, one from each electorate.
“I was in class when my teacher, Mr Hantzis, got the email. He was so excited!” Rose said. Rose also couldn’t wait to tell Ms Quinn the good news. “She was really excited for me, too.”
Rose will attend a five-day residential program in Canberra in August this year. We can’t wait to hear all about her experience!
